"Belle Moral: A Natural History" is set in Edinburgh in 1899, in the revered estate known as Belle Moral, home to the eccentric MacIsaac family – Pearl, an amateur scientist and "modern woman," caught between two worlds: science vs. mysticism and folklore; knowledge vs. nature; sane vs. insane, and changing views on men’s and women’s roles; her sweet and maternal spinster Aunt Flora, who keeps a tight grip on the household; and a household full of quirky characters who may know more than they are willing to tell. As Pearl prepares for the reading of her late father’s will, she also tries to dismiss the sinister signs that Belle Moral may also be home to another... one whose existence her Aunt seems determined to keep secret. A story of family secrets and the birth of the modern era, Belle Moral is foremost a comedy of morals.
